Tall Tales from the Wild West: Slue-Foot Sue and Pecos Bill

In this episode, we travel to the Wild West for a larger-than-life American folk tale: “Slue-Foot Sue and Pecos Bill", based on a story originally by Edward S. O'Reilly.

Pecos Bill is the toughest cowboy who ever lived. He could lasso a tornado, ride a mountain lion, and wrestle a rattlesnake. But even he meets his match when he falls in love with the bold and beautiful Slue-Foot Sue, ("Slue-Foot" means: feet point outward), who dreams of riding his wild horse, Widow-Maker. What happens next is one of the funniest and most unforgettable classic fables from American folklore!

Way out on the Rio Grande, there lived the greatest cowgirl you ever did see. Her name was Slewfoot Sue, and she was something special. While most folks rode horses, Sue had herself a giant catfish, big as a barn, and she'd ride that whiskered critter right down the Rio Grande River like it was nothing. One fine day, Peacoast Bill was out fishing with his cow boy pack when he spotted her. Now Pico's Bill was the toughest cowboy in all the land, with his trusty rattlesnake lasso named Shake and his wild bronco called widow Maker. But when he saw Sue riding that catfish, his heart just about jumped out of his chest. Bill courted Sue something fierce. Why he even shot down all the stars from the sky, every last one except for a single star that became the lone star of Texas. When Bill finally asked Sue to marry him, she said yes, but she had one condition. She wanted to ride widow Maker Bill's n rehearse. Now, that's when the trouble started. Widow Maker was mighty jealous. He didn't like sharing Bill's attention one bit, so when Sue climbed on his back in her fancy bustle dress, that horse bucked her clear off. Sue landed right on her bustle and started bouncing higher and higher and higher. She bounced so high she was heading straight for the moon. Bill tried to catch her, but he got pulled up with her. Some folks say they both bounced clean away and ended up living on the moon, never to be seen again. But here's what most folks believe happened. After Sue had been bouncing for days, you'll realize she'd starve if he didn't do something quick. So he took his rattlesnake lasso shake and roped her right out of the sky, pulling her back down to earth. Widowmaker felt mighty bad about what he'd done. He apologized to Sue, and she forgave that NR horse. And wouldn't you know it, pecos Bill and slewfoot Sioue got hitched. After all, they had themselves a beautiful wedding under that lone Star, and they lived happily ever after, riding the rains together with Shake and Widow Maker by their side. And that Young cow Pokes is the tale of the greatest cowboy and cow girl the West has ever known. The end. Thanks for listening to quick Classics for kids. I hope you enjoyed today's story.
