This is one of the original Tell Me A Ghost Story calls from the early days of the show. Short, raw, and exactly where it all started. All three of these calls were later incorporated into longer compilation episodes.
Hey, it's Michelle, and this early episode has three true ghost stories that cover three completely different kinds of contact between the living and the dead.
Christina is the host of Espooky Tales on the Scary FM Network, and she calls in with a true ghost story from her childhood in Oakland, California, that began as mockery and ended with a bruised tailbone and a lesson she has not forgotten. She was eleven years old. Her nine-year-old brother had always insisted he could see shadow people, and Christina and her twin were not taking him seriously. They were sitting in their father's trailer behind his car shop when her brother pointed out shadow people standing next to Christina, and she started fake punching the air where he was pointing. Her brother said they don't like it when you do that. The chair was pulled out from under her. All four legs had been solidly on the floor. She had not been leaning back. Something pulled it while she was sitting on it, and she fell hard. Her brother looked over and said see I told you. Their father's response when they ran to his office was that they should be more scared of the living than the dead. Christina was more concerned about her injured tailbone. Go check out Espooky Tales on the Scary FM Network.
Carla calls in with the shortest and most quietly devastating call in the early archive. She is living with the love of her life, who passed away in 2020. The love did not end. The presence did not leave. She has everything on film. She describes it as a gift that keeps on giving, and she means that without any irony. There is nothing more to say about Carla's story because Carla said everything that needed to be said in the time she took to say it. Some love stories do not end.
Nellie from Clinton, Illinois, returns with a true ghost story rooted in her Mexican grandmother's warnings about what happens when you sleep in the wrong position. Her grandmother called it el muerto, the dead getting on top of you. Nellie was eighteen years old, sleeping on her stomach on an ordinary weekday morning, when she felt something heavy climb onto her back. She opened her eyes and tried to look behind her. A dark shadow was there. It put its mouth near her ear and growled, a low sound that was half laugh and half something she cannot describe even now. She could not move. It lasted a few seconds, and then it was gone. Nellie grew up hearing her grandmother's warning and wondering if it was true. At eighteen, she found out. The experience of el muerto, a heavy presence pinning a sleeping person while a dark figure looms and growls, connects to sleep paralysis accounts documented across Latin American cultures for generations and shares remarkable similarities with the Old Hag phenomenon in European tradition, the Kanashibari in Japanese culture, and the shadow figure encounters reported across nearly every culture that has ever tried to explain what sits on people in the dark while they sleep.
Three real callers. Three true ghost stories about what happens when the dead make physical contact.

[00:00:36] [SPEAKER_02]: Welcome to Tell Me A Ghost Story.
[00:00:40] [SPEAKER_02]: The late night call in podcast where we delve into the world of the supernatural and explore the eerie and unexplained.
[00:00:49] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm your host, Michelle Newman.
[00:00:53] [SPEAKER_02]: This podcast features true stories from our collars that will send shivers down your spine and leave you questioning the existence of the afterlife.
[00:01:04] [SPEAKER_02]: So grab a cozy blanket, turn down the lights.
[00:01:38] [SPEAKER_00]: And then you'll see the color in the back of the car shop that you worked in.
[00:01:42] [SPEAKER_00]: So we would hang out after school.
[00:01:45] [SPEAKER_00]: And so we were there sitting around this table.
[00:01:50] [SPEAKER_00]: Well, you were sitting on the bed where the bed is.
[00:01:52] [SPEAKER_00]: Some very small space.
[00:01:53] [SPEAKER_00]: So he was sitting one of the bed's and he was facing us at the little tiny table.
[00:01:58] [SPEAKER_00]: My twin was on the couch part of this like table.
[00:02:01] [SPEAKER_00]: And I was on the chair across from her and he was like, oh the shadow people are next to you.
[00:02:09] [SPEAKER_00]: And so I said, oh are they like mocking him?
[00:02:12] [SPEAKER_00]: Are they here?
[00:02:13] [SPEAKER_00]: And I was fake punching the area he was pointing out where these shadow people were supposedly hanging out at an ointment.
[00:02:20] [SPEAKER_00]: It was like very, it was either behind me or next to me.
[00:02:25] [SPEAKER_00]: But I was fake hitting this area and then he was like, they don't like it when you do that.
[00:02:31] [SPEAKER_00]: And I was like, what?
[00:02:33] [SPEAKER_00]: And suddenly my chair was pulled out from under me.
[00:02:40] [SPEAKER_00]: I saw all my butt and I was not leaning back on the chair to accidentally fall all four lids of the chair were solidly on the ground on the floor.
[00:02:54] [SPEAKER_00]: And yeah, so literally someone pulled the chair out from me sitting on it and I fell.
[00:03:02] [SPEAKER_00]: And then he looks over at us again and he says, see?
[00:03:08] [SPEAKER_00]: I told you they don't like it when you do that.
[00:03:12] [SPEAKER_00]: I was like, oh who said that?
[00:03:13] [SPEAKER_00]: What are you talking about?
[00:03:15] [SPEAKER_00]: And so we just got up and ran to my dad's office and tried to tell him like what happened?
[00:03:21] [SPEAKER_00]: And he was like, oh you don't need to be scared of the bad.
[00:03:23] [SPEAKER_00]: You need to be more scared of the living.
[00:03:25] [SPEAKER_00]: And I was like, I am injured.
[00:03:27] [SPEAKER_00]: My butt was injured in this and it was so shadow people.
[00:03:32] [SPEAKER_00]: And so yeah, that is my one and only paranormal experience that directly happened to me.
[00:03:40] [SPEAKER_02]: Christina is the host of a spooky tales, part of a scary FM network.
[00:03:44] [SPEAKER_02]: Go check out her show to give yourself a scare for Halloween.
[00:03:50] [SPEAKER_03]: Hello, Michelle, my name is Carla.
[00:03:55] [SPEAKER_03]: I definitely have a ghost story, a love story, a eternal love story.
[00:04:03] [SPEAKER_03]: And I live with this forever love ever since she left the physical.
[00:04:09] [SPEAKER_03]: And I have everything on film.
[00:04:16] [SPEAKER_03]: I can prove everything I'm saying.
[00:04:19] [SPEAKER_03]: But I am living with the love of my life, the past on in 2020.
[00:04:27] [SPEAKER_03]: And that's all I can tell you, except that it's a gift that keeps on giving.
[00:04:37] [SPEAKER_03]: Thank you for letting me share.
[00:04:40] [SPEAKER_03]: Bye for now.
[00:04:49] [SPEAKER_02]: Thank you Carla for your story.
[00:04:51] [SPEAKER_02]: Short but very sweet.
[00:04:53] [SPEAKER_04]: Hi Michelle, this is Nelly from Plain, Illinois.
[00:04:59] [SPEAKER_04]: I am going to tell you one of my experiences that I had when I was 18.
[00:05:09] [SPEAKER_04]: In the next game culture, my grandma wants to tell me about how if you, it's similar to paper analysis.
[00:05:20] [SPEAKER_04]: But my grandma used to say this phrase that the dead will get on top of you if you sleep at a certain position.
[00:05:34] [SPEAKER_04]: And when I was 18, I don't know if it was just me dreaming or if that happened to me or what my grandma used to tell me.
[00:05:45] [SPEAKER_04]: But it was almost early morning.
[00:05:50] [SPEAKER_04]: I remember it was something we can, so I was just like on sleeping in.
[00:05:57] [SPEAKER_04]: And I remember I was laying down on my stomach and just sleeping and I felt something had to be get on top.
[00:06:10] [SPEAKER_04]: And when I felt that I tried to, like, I opened my eyes a little bit and I tried to look back just to see what that was.
[00:06:21] [SPEAKER_04]: And when I was looking back it's like a dark, something dark, the dark shadow.
[00:06:28] [SPEAKER_04]: And in my ear I heard this dark shadow just like grow, kind of like a grow kind of last.
[00:06:40] [SPEAKER_04]: And it's scared me. I like try to like move but I couldn't.
[00:06:46] [SPEAKER_04]: And it lasted for about like a few seconds and then it just went away.
[00:06:57] [SPEAKER_04]: And that was something that really like scared me because on the grow I can't really just remember hearing the grow and the laugh.
[00:07:08] [SPEAKER_04]: But yeah, that's one of the things that may grow, you should tell me that in Spanish is called it this, who will be your mortal, the dead got on top of you.
[00:07:23] [SPEAKER_02]: Thank you, Danly, for calling it again. And as we all know, grandma, it's always right.
